Field visits

Teaching and learning in classroom or lecture theatre definitely provides the students with the theoretical knowledge of the subject, and practical sessions in the laboratory provide them with some hands-on experience of what they have learnt in class. However, how the theory is applied in real-world situations, including in industrial scale, is a significantly different story in most of the cases. Thus, to allow students to have in-field exposure and to prepare them for the job market in the long run, the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Gardening arranges numerous field visits each semester. Following is the list of places visited by the students for courses offered by this department.

To reunite the past students of the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Gardening, an ‘Alumni Get-together’ was held at the faculty premises in 2015. Alumni of this department participated at this event with their families and this function was an excellent opportunity not only for socializing and conversation but also for recreation.

Farmer Advisory Services on Production of Gherkins for Export

The staff of the department is actively involved in farmer advisory programs on cultivation of Gherkin in Kurunegala District. The Sunfrost  (Pvt.) Ltd., a subsidiary group of Hayley’s Company, is actively engaged in cultivation of Gherkin during Yala season, 2010, for export. Several members of our staff are engaged in a farmer advisory program on cultivation aspects of this crop. Few of our past students, too, are employed by the company and the department has been continuously providing advisory services to Sunfrost (Pvt.) Ltd. during the past 5-7 years. During this period the company was able to cultivate and export several processed products such as Spanich Pepper, Bell Pepper and Jalepeno peppers. The Department, too, contributed to this program not only by providing farmer advisory services, but also by conducting several research programs on these crops. The Sunfrost (Pvt.) Ltd. is the biggest gherkin exporter in the country and the major buyers are from Japan.
